Your Day-of-Move essentials survival guide

20150522_143952.pngThere are a lot of factors that go into your moving day, and with all the excitement, it can be easy to overlook something that could be essential to a successful day.  When you are moving with children, pets and other responsibilities, it is very important to put together a “Day-of-move” box filled with essential items that your family may need before the house gets fully unpacked. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® and Nashville Moms Blog are here to provide you and your family with the perfect checklist to ensure your first day in your new home is a great family experience.

Step 1

Find a box that can easily be handled and fits well into your car.  TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® carries a box specifically for this with handles to provide ease of movement. dayofmove

Step 2

One of the first things people tend to want to do after a day of moving is shower.  Be sure to pack soap, shampoo, towels, and even a shower curtain liner in your “Day-of-move” box, so it is easily accessible when it comes time to take a break.  It may be easy to even purchase travel sizes of these items so they don’t take up too much space or risk spilling.  Also, be sure to pack toilet paper, toothbrushes, and a change of clothes for each member of the family.

Step 3

The next items to add to the “Day-of-move” are paper plates, cups, and plastic utensils.  This makes it easy to eat before you have the kitchen unpacked.  This is important especially if you have children and have no time to spare when it comes to getting food ready, even if pizza may be the meal of choice!  Many families may like to place their coffee maker in the car, so they have it set up in the morning to be ready for a day of organizing.  Don’t leave the pets hungry either!  Be sure to pack a small bag of pet food and bowls for your animals as well.

Step 4

If your family is anything like others that are moving into their new home, you will need to pack some items that will help you begin setting things up right way.  These items include a basic tool kit, garbage bags, an unopened bottle of all-purpose cleaner, and scissors.  These essentials will get you up and running as soon as you step foot into the new home.  No need to waste your time looking for items that you need before you open the first box!

Step 5

These essentials are especially important for the moms out there!  Pack the remaining space of your “Day-of-move” box with items to keep your child busy while you unpack and begin organizing your new home.  Pack their favorite snacks, stuffed animal, and small game.  Don’t forget to add in a tablet for the children to play games and watch movies.  These items could be life savers for keeping them settled while all the work is going on.  A couple of other miscellaneous items are diapers, chargers, and a Bluetooth speaker to make the unpacking a little more fun if your cable isn’t quite ready yet.

Other items to consider sliding into the “Day-of-move” box or make sure they are in a secure spot during the move are legal documents, medications, jewelry, and medical documents.  Although, most of these you may not need on the actual day of your move, these items are important and/or valuable and should be kept in a safe place during a move.  Also, consider packing any extreme valuables in the car to prevent possible breakage.

Planning ahead with a “Day-of-move” box and a plan for the big moving day will drastically minimize the amount of stress that creeps up on moving day.  When moving with children, planning is key for turning a potential mess into a family victory.  Check out our printable “Day-of-move” box checklist to ensure you don’t miss a thing for your day of the move!  For any other questions about moving visit TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® at!

Presidential Candidate Stand

With the presidential img_9044election a major buzz in the media, why not be a nominee yourself!  This is a very simple costume that can even be made the day of Halloween.

Step 1:  Use a dish box because it holds a more rectangular shape.  Cut the top of in a slant toward the back of the box.

Step 2: Spray paint the box blackdemocrat-stand-6

Step 3:  Print out the party symbol of choice (unless you are very artistic and want to draw it) and use spray adhesive to attach it to the box.

Step 4: Using either glue or tape attach a black pipe cleaner with a black craft pom pom attached to the end.

Step 5:  Glue straps to hold the box on your shoulders.

This is one of the most unique costumes, and any coin can be made with a little artistic flare.

Step 1: Flatten the box and cut out a circle and drew the letters to prepare for cutout

Step 2:  Carefully cut out the letters

Step 3:  Spray paint the large circle and letters seperately

Step 4: Glue letters on to the circle and cut area for the circle to fit snugly onto the shoulder

Rubik’s cube

This couple did an amazing job with the classic Rubik’s cube costume!  Follow the link here to find out how to make this the perfect costume!  Rubiks-Cube-Halloween-Costume-at-thebensonstreet.com_

Depending on the age of the person wearing the costume we recommend a using a small box for young children, a medium for females, and a large box for men.

Nerd’s box

This is one of our favorite duo costumes!  It is bright, colorful, and incredibly easy to recreate! The Nerds box  does take a little more time than some of the other costumes because there is a little more painting involved.  We suggest using medium-size boxes for this costume.

Step 1:  Cut the top and bottom out of both boxes.f14301d3c63826f3d9fd36f03ead7aab

Step 2:  Spray paint one box purple and one pink.

Step 3:  Put the boxes together to draw and paint the Nerds logo and design.  You can get as creative as you would like with this.  Just make it fun.

Step 4: Glue straps on for the boxes to sit one your shoulders.

Step 4: Add extra flare by wearing the same color as the boxes and funny glasses.

This is a great costume for couples or best friends!

Raisin Boxes

You can’t get much cuter than a box of raisins!  This is another very simple costume that will get a tremendous amount of attention while trick-or-treating! If you find yourself without a bonnet, you can simply use a red scarf!

Step 1: Find a small taller box and spray paint it red

Step 2: Cut out the front and arm holes on each side for your child

Step 3: search online for the “Sun-Maid” logo.  Print it out, and cut it out (we recommend using a craft knife).

Step 4:  Use spray adhesive

to attach the lettering to the bottom of the box

Step 5:  Add the bonnet or scarf and have fun!
